How to Plan an Outdoor Leadership Camp for University Students: Steps and Tips to Get Your Started
If you have been assigned to plan an outdoor leadership camp for the students – this can be a daunting task. Even if you are a student or a member of the faculty it would take some planning and investment in time. Working in a group or a committee will spread the responsibilities. To start of, we have here some tips for you. Hopefully you will find them useful. In this article on “how to plan an outdoor leadership camp for university students” we have listed some important factors to consider.
And, at the end of the article we also have a ‘ready to use’ off-the-shelf leadership camp package consisting of location and its services. One that you can use right away. All you need to do is include some of your own sessions or activities to customize the leadership camp to according to the objectives you want to accomplish.
WHY
Normally, the purpose of conducting an outdoor leadership camp away from campus is to enabe students from different backgrounds to work together to achieve a common goal. In general it will make students develop hollistically by developing their different life-skills something which will ultimately benefit them. List out your objectives so you can hone in to your desired outcome when the program finishes.
LOCATION
In Malaysia, we are blessed with so many places to conduct the leadership camp. You will be spoilt for choice from islands like Pangkor and Langkawi, to hill areas like the Cameron Highlands, Frasers Hills and the jungles like the Royal Belum, the Endau-Rompin and Taman Negara to name a few. Within these areas there are private operators that will have their own camps. Some can be large with many amenities and activities. Some are just simple campsites with toilets, showers and multipurpose hall. So decide where and also how much budget you have because this will determine where you can conduct your program. Pay careful attention to some restrictions – some universities only allow you to travel within the state or not exceeding a certain distance. So check this too.
- island
- national park
- jungle setting
- kampung setting
- beach
- city – (why not)
TRANSPORT
Obviously when the place is far, transportation cost can also be more expensive. Travel time will be longer to get to the place (and also to get home after the program). These factors will also come into play when you plan for your leadership camp. Mode of transportation also contribute to the cost – if you are able to use transportation like the university’s bus that may save you some money. Otherwise you will have to look at using express buses, charter coaches, train service, etc.
ACTIVITIES
You should discuss with your committee members on conducting some of the sessions yourselves. And eventually get the participants to the camp to take some responsibilities and tasks. Camp operators may also have their own activities such as jungle trekking, river tubing, flying fox etc. Be sure to conduct a debriefing session after these activities or towards the end of your program and let the participants share their experience – how they felt, specific things they did to help their friend, etc.
