Gunung Tahan Climbing Package

GUNUNG TAHAN PACKAGE 2016: COME CONQUER THE MOST CHALLENGED PEAK IN PENINSULA MALAYSIA

If you have the sudden yearn to conquer a mountain in Peninsula Malaysia look no further as there is Gunung Tahan for you to attempt and conquer. Our Gunung Tahan Package provides you with the opportunity to reach the 2187m summit. Gunung Tahan after all is the highest peak in Peninsula Malaysia.

Your journey to reach the top of the mountain will require you to pluck up your courage to ascend and descend mountains, cross and wade through rivers, camp with basic necessities, experience the discomfort of being wet and cold and more. It can be one of the best outdoor experience you will go through.

gunung tahan packageLocated in the heart of the Taman Negara National Park, climbing and reaching the summit and descending will normally take about 5 days. Any shorter trip will require higher endurance level by the climbing group.

To familiarize yourself, this peak is approximately 53km from Kampung Kuala Tahan in near Jerantut, Pahang. A closer location to reach Gunung Tahan would be from Kuala Juram (entry point is Taman Negara Sungai Relau). It is only 32km from this location. Our staging point of the Gunung Tahan Package starts from here. Remember, this program starts and ends in Merapoh, Pahang.

Gunung Tahan is truly not for the fainthearted. Even the shortest, the Merapoh-Merapoh trail, takes three to four days to complete. Known as one of the toughest treks and among the most challenging mountains to climb in the region due to the various peaks one would have to ascend and descend before reaching the main summit, much is still being discovered about Gunung Tahan.

INTERESTING FACTS

i. Gunung Tahan is situated in the Tahan Range in Peninsula Malaysia.

ii. It is reputed to be about 250 million years old and formed during the prehistoric era.

iii. It was formed about 150 million years earlier than the oldest rainforest in the world which grew around it.

WORD OF CAUTION

Do not take this climb lightly as you will need to be physically fit – it is a well known fact that this climb is tougher than climbing Mount Kinabalu in Sabah. So get your fitness level up with sufficient training starting a few months prior to the climb. A medical check up although not required by us is highly recommended especially if you are over 40 years old.

Warning: Anyone wanting to take part in a Gunung Tahan climb must be aware of the difficulty of the climb and the perilous journey to be encountered. Climbers must be strong willed, fit and prepared – the more experience you have under your belt the better.

With that being said accidents do happen and a life was lost on the climb to Mount Tahan in Feb of 2016. Click here to read the news in The Star newspaper.

Tips on Getting Ready for the Taman Negara Sungai Relau Merapoh Adventure

Tips on Getting Ready for the Taman Negara Sungai Relau Merapoh Adventure: May save you not only time but your money too.

For your packing list, we would recommend you have comfortable clothes like t-shirt (easy dry long pants are better than shorts). For caving, wear something that you won’t mind getting dirty. You can wear this same clothes when you visit the Kuala Juram Sanctuary the next day as both these visits are ‘wet’. Please have comfortable shoes for the trip. Wear something you wouldn’t mind getting wet and dirty but gives a good grip when you walk. This will be especially useful when you walk in the cave or in the stream on Day 2 of your trip.

Wearing something like the TEVA river sandals are good. You don’t have to buy Teva though because they are very expensive. I have tried them on wet rocks and they suck. You can get these teva like velcro sandals at the Bata shop and most sports shop in town. They are easy to dry and feels better than walking in wet shoes. To select a good pair, look for those with soles that are rubbery and soft – they are good for slippery surfaces.

petzl tikka headlampYou will also need a headlamp for each of you for the caving. Headlamps are better that flashlights because you can keep your hands free because there will be some climbing, grabbing, holding etc  involved in the cave.

If you are travelling in a group, make sure everyone in your group has one. It feels a lot better with your own headlamp than sharing the same light source with others.

insect repellent taman negaraThese headlamps (made in China) can be found cheap at our night markets they cost about RM15- RM30 each. They are good enough for the caving and night walk which you will be doing. You don’t really need to get those expensive Petzl headlamps to use only during these 2 activities. Find a headlamp which uses the CREE light source. They are newer technology and emits brighter light than than the LED types. Make sure you replace the free battery they give you with fresh alkaline batteries to make sure that your light will not fade on you in the cave. Go for branded batteries like Energizer or Duracell – don’t rely on the cheap made in China batteries.

If you are bringing your family and you have young children, get insect repellant for your kids’ comfort. Can be in cream or stick form. They are available at any of our drug stores like Guardian or Watsons. I find the more expensive they are the more effective .. so you get what you pay for.

Pack some high energy food and food your kids like. There are not many stores in Merapoh or the park that you can get food which your kids may be familiar with especially if you are coming from overseas and not used to the local food.

Making plans for a trip to Taman Negara Sungai Relau? Here are 2 of our best selling packages:

(i) 3 Days /2 Nights Merapoh & Taman Negara Sg Relau – Great for Beginners. From RM180.00 per pax only.

(ii). 3 Days / 2 Nights Merapoh for the Caving Adventurer. Accommodation + Meals + Caving Activities + Fish Sanctuary

Taman Negara Sungai Relau Merapoh Package for Outdoor Adventure

Taman Negara Sungai Relau Merapoh Package for Outdoor Adventure: Designed for the Outdoor Junkie Wanting an Outdoor Challenge.

For those of you who are planning a trip to Taman Negara, we have a 3 day 2 night outdoor adventure program for you. Taman Negara is famed for being the world’s oldest tropical rainforest. The rainforest is home to a diverse range of wild animals, from the Asian elephant and Sumatran Rhino to the Malayan tiger and crab-eating macaque. The area is so huge that there are still some parts which are unexplored.

The highlight of this particular package is the location. It is located at the Taman Negara Sungai Relau which is another entrance to the world famous Taman Negara. If people were to ask us what is the difference of this place if compared to Taman Negara Kuala Tahan, the most distinct difference is there are definitely a lot less people here. If you enjoy a calm and peaceful surrounding, then this place is perfect for you.

There is no built-up of chalets, rest houses and backpackers at every nook and cranny, no tour operators fighting for your attention.. just what a real National Park is supposed to be. Our packages are even suitable for 2 people based on independent travel.

Taman Negara Pahang | Sungai Relau Entrance

If you are planning an outdoor trip to Taman Negara Pahang, you may be interested to know that there is another entrance to the world famous national park. You may be quite familiar with Kuala Tahan and the journey from Kuala Tembeling to the National Park.

But, there is another entrance. The name of the place is called Sungai Relau or its full name is Taman Negara Pahang Sungai Relau. This entrance is located on the western side of Taman Negara. The entrance was only opened to the general public in the early 1990’s. To get here, from the town of Merapoh it is a 7km journey to the park’s office at Sungai Relau. To get to Merapoh, one has to travel a 30km journey southwards by road from Gua Musang or a 100km journey from Kuala Lipis.

Taman Negara Sungai Relau is the popular point for mountain climbing to Gunung Tahan. Hikers attempting the climb from this route to Gunung Tahan will take a mere 2 days as compared to the longer trek of 5 days from Kuala Tahan. A 14-km road links Sungai Relau to Kuala Juram, the foot hill for climbing Gunung Tahan where climbers will be dropped off for their climb up the highest peak on Peninsula Malaysia.

In this park, there are many forest trails.  Among the popular trails are the Interpretive Trail, Negeram Trail, Palas Trail and Gua Gajah Trail. The 0.5km Interpretive Trail provides introduction to the rainforest and the ecosystem. The Negeram Trail follows the Sg Relau river and end at Pasir Gelanggang passing through the lowland and swampy forest. The Palas Trail is about 1.6km long. This trail has some  hilly terrain, peat swamp and lowland forest.

The trail to Gua Gajah is about 5km long. Gua Gajah is a limestone outcrop and provides shelter for elephants during the monsoon. Inside Gua Gajah, there is a bats chamber where guano and bats are found. The low number of visitors has makes Taman Negara Sungai Relau a heaven for wildlife observation. A newly discovered cave called Gua Jinjang Pelamin is open only to a select few. To attempt this cave exploration with its varied chambers and halls, one has to get in touch with us for the exclusive arrangement.

Taman  Negara is considered one of the most extensive protected  area consisting of pristine, lowland, evergreen rainforest in Malaysia. For those that loves the outdoors, there are many activities which they can take part in.

Highlights include cave exploration, waterfalls, rivers, streams, night walks, bird watching, panning for gold and more. This area is suitable for independent and group travellers, and also suitable for families with small children. Do contact us if you require further information or wish to make a booking.
