However, with the conveniently located loops that allow you to use your paddle as a handle, the 12 foot and over board weight problem should not be an issue.

I have gone through this book and found it full of information for those wanting to look into keeping fit on the water by paddling. Here is my review on the book.

Paddle Fit is the brainchild of full-time paddleboarding coach Brody Welte. His website, coaching services and now this enhanced digital download teach new and veteran stand up paddleboarders proper technique and a fitness regimen they can practice while they are out on their boards.

Welte was introduced to the sport of paddleboarding in 2007, while living on the Hawaiian island of Kaua’i. The lifetime adventurer is now 100% focused on the stand up paddleboard industry, and introducing it to as many people as possible. He also partners with Dave Kalama to offer SUP adventure excursions called Kalama Kamps.

He teamed up with fitness and sports writer Pete Williams to create the Paddle Fit Kindle book. Williams is the creator of an obstacle race training program available at www.obstaclefit.com, and also serves as editor for EnduranceSportsFlorida.com. Williams has authored or co-authored 18 different fitness, sports and business books.

The Idea

The idea for the PaddleFit workout program is best explained by the Amazon description of this enhanced digital download which complements text with audio and video:

With help from veteran author Pete Williams, paddleboard fanatic and coach Brody Welte sets out to demonstrate how you can work out on your favorite body of water, creating the body and health you have always dreamed of.

Welte calls the PaddleFit exercise program the “un-workout” that strengthens your core, shoulders and hips while improving your balance and cardiovascular system. He refers to it as the un-workout because you experience all of these health benefits while immersing yourself physically, visually, audibly and mentally in a beautiful, water-based outdoor environment, something that traditional workout programs do not offer.

Welte has said that he wanted to make a digital download affordable for any budget level, and the price tag of this audio, video and text digital download delivers on that promise. (If your smartphone, computer or tablet does not support the audio and video software used to create this virtual book, it is automatically converted to the standard Kindle text format.)

How The Book Is Laid out

I find the book very easy to ‘negotiate’. The 75 page Paddle Fit e-book available for Kindle devices alternately includes more than 45 minutes of video instruction. After a Table of Contents, you are taken to a video Introduction. Brody Welte explains that every day he gets paid to wade out into beautiful water, jump on “what looks like a giant surfboard” and teach others to do the same.

He discusses the total body benefits of paddleboarding, as well as the dolphins, stingrays, manatees and fish he often encounters. A comparison of stand up paddleboarding as exercise to traditional workout programs is discussed, and this leads into the second video, titled My Story.

A brief history of paddleboarding is discussed, the author reveals his introduction to the sport in Hawaii. You are taken from gold Olympic medalist Duke Kahanamoku in 1920 to Welte’s meeting with SUP founding fathers Laird Hamilton and Dave Kalama when the author was working as a certified personal trainer in 2007. After joining some other SUP newbies that referred to the sport as life-changing, the author new that teaching and coaching stand up paddleboarding was a viable business.

From Hawaii to the East Coast of the United States, Welte began looking for the perfect area to launch an SUP training business. Tampa Bay, Florida was where he ended up. When celebrities like Kate Hudson Jennifer Aniston began paddleboarding, his business took off.

Calling stand up paddleboarding “a killer workout disguised as play”, Welte goes into detail instructing how to properly size your paddle and choose the perfect board. Discussing board selection, you find that there are a few basic types:

  • Surfing boards
  • Racing boards
  • Fishing boards
  • Hybrid boards
  • Inflatables

Board construction can range from carbon fiber to plastic, aluminum to wood, fiberglass to PVC. The author then recommends using an adjustable paddle and renting on board when you first start out. This way you can discover your perfect paddle length before you make a purchase.

The next few videos, between 29 seconds and 2 minutes and 39 seconds in length, cover proper stroking technique, how to turn your board effectively, falling off and getting back on board, and several other SUP techniques.

Each video is intentionally short, allowing you to quickly and simply focus on a particular technique or strategy. Videos 11 through 20 cover specific warm-up routines and exercises which take place predominantly on your SUP. These are just a few of the exercises which are explained in detail in the book:

Part 1 of this enhanced digital download is entitled How to SUP. You are instructed exactly how to get on the board, and the proper stance that most effectively keeps you on the board and out of the water. This video reveals the “top of the head” paddle measurement you should make so that you grip your paddle properly.

A 1 minute video then reveals the 5 components of a paddle stroke, which include:

  • Reach
  • Grab or catch
  • Power phase
  • Paddle the article in the water
  • Recovery

Since actually paddling your board is crucial to this enjoyable outdoor activity, the author covers proper technique in great detail.

He explains that your reach is the key to an efficient and powerful stroke. This is why getting the perfect paddle length and blade size are so important. When your technique and paddle combine for a long, effortless stroke, you move more water.

You are instructed to never lock your arms in a straight position. Shoulder rotation is discussed to minimize the wear and tear which takes place from a day filled with paddling. The author even teaches an expert trick that will help you paddle perfectly.

Expert SUP Paddling Trick

Attach a piece of tape on the front and side of your board where you will target your reach. Then place another one on your board side by your rear foot. This gives you a forward reach target, while reminding you to pull your paddle out of the water at your back foot.

You are also instructed to use your hips, legs and upper body, and not make the rookie mistake of just paddling with your arms. The Waterman’s Workout and Paddle Fit routines, the 2 taught in this book, focus on all of those body parts which make proper paddling efficient and pain-free.

The Stand Up Paddle Boards (SUP) are not the latest craze but the interest in them have been slowly building up over the years. People have been sharing their paddle boarding experience on the internet and through social media and this has somehow helped propel the sport further. I have put here some safety tips for those of you who want to start paddle boarding.

Stand up paddleboards offer a lot of rewards for young and old, women and men alike. But in your haste to get out on the water and have fun, you may be overlooking some important safety concerns. Although what I have put here are simple tips but you should not dismiss them in any case. So, here they are you top 7 tips for Stand Up Paddle Boarding.

1. Get in Shape

SUPs can be a lot of fun. They get you out on the water, in the great outdoors, they are the perfect vehicle for socializing, and they are super versatile. But a day spent on your SUP can be very grueling physically if you are not prepared. Boost your cardiovascular system and overall body strength before you take up paddleboarding, and you have a better chance of enjoying a safe, injury-free experience.

2. Know Your Body of Water

Check tide and current charts. Bring along someone who knows the body of water you are going to be paddling on if you are not familiar with it yourself. Check the weather report. Know everything that could affect the water source where you plan to paddle before you head out.

3. Stick To Your Board

If you become injured or find yourself in an emergency situation, stay with your board. Your SUP is much more visible than you are, and makes the perfect flotation device if you are injured or worn-out. A leash ensures you can always retrieve your board.

4. Never Go Out Alone

This should be a no-brainer. However, when the weather is perfect, you have a day off from work and none of your friends or fellow paddlers are available, it may seem impossible to resist the urge to hit the water. You have to anyway. There is always tomorrow, and if you go out alone you may not be able to rescue yourself from an emergency situation. Don’t take the risk.

5. Wear a Life Jacket (Personal Flotation Device)

A PFD is designed to hold you in a face-up, floating position in the water. If you suffer a head injury and are rendered unconscious, a personal flotation device just may save your life. It also cushions any falls or tumbles you make from your board. I recommend something like the Onyx MoveVent PFD here.

 6. Carry a Whistle

The sound of a whistle can be heard for incredibly long distances across open water. If you suffer an injury, lose your board or find yourself in some other type of emergency situation, a series of 3 short, sharp whistle blasts can alert someone to your situation. I would recommend something like the Jetscream Whistle which is pealess and very loud – 122db! And since it is made of plastic it floats and does not rust.

7. Don’t Lose Yourself in the Experience

It’s easy to forget that you can go from having the time of your life to a catastrophe scenario in just seconds. Keep an eye on your surroundings. Enjoy yourself and have a good time, but be aware of everything that is going on around you. SUPs can provide a lifetime of health benefits and outdoor enjoyment, as long as you respect the experience and keep your head in the game.
